About Us

Rainbow Child and Family Centre (rainbowCFC) is a local registered charity that started as a community playgroup in 1985.

Set up in an old portacabin by parents to address the gap in preschool places in the local area.

Throughout the following 36 years, we have continued to grow and expand our services and our centre enabling us to address a wider range of well researched and documented local needs within our community and throughout our City.

What We Do

We have a large light, bright, welcoming building with a positive vibe.

Our outdoor area which we created with a grant of £150,000 from Garfield Weston foundation’s 60th Anniversary is a fantastic outdoor play area that has become a focal point for our growing community.

We are the only purpose-built community building in our area and we are very much a community-led organisation offering an array of activities, services, training and programmes for everyone from 0 to 90 years to help, support, educate and bond our community and the wider City.

Our building is open 6 days a week from 8:30 am to 9 pm most evenings.

We engage with 150+ children, young people, older residents or parents within the centre daily, with over 1500+ attending our annual events (winter wonderland & Wellbeing week).

Our Services Fall Into 5 Areas and Include:

Early Years services (preschool, 2 & 3-Year-old programmes, Crèche )

Youth Services (6 Weekly Clubs & Full Summer Scheme for Children & Young People 6–18 Years)

Community Services (50+ Clubs & Activities, Family Fun Days, Financial /Wellbeing Advice Clinic etc)

Why We Do It

Our mission is to “create positive memories” for all who come through our doors.

We chose this simple mission statement because it sums up our values and goals of why we at Rainbow do what we do. Research shows:

A child with happy memories is more self-confident, develops a larger hippocampus (brain region important for learning, memory and stress responses), is more resilient to challenges in life.

Don’t cry because it is over.  Smile because it happened.

All of which a child growing up with disadvantages needs to overcome or balance out the adverse childhood experiences scales to help break the cycle

An adult who has happy memories of their childhood has greater social connectedness, better long term relationships, an enhanced sense of self, is better able to develop healthy behaviours later in life and is more resilient to life stressors or challenges.

“Don’t cry because it is over.  Smile because it happened.” – Dr. Seuss

Early Year’s Services

Our early year’s services provide learning environments (with parental involvement) that support neural development, improving future outcomes in education, and social, emotional and behavioural well being.

Educational attainment among 15-year-olds is higher for children who attended quality pre-primary education.

Our Youth services continue this learning and supports young people during the turbulent growing up years to minimise risk-taking behaviours, develop positive relationships, build their skills and confidence regardless of family or financial circumstances.

Community Services

Our community services build community cohesion, decrease isolation and increase well being for all members of our community.

Our childcare services provide affordable childcare locally allowing parents to continue their education or go to work knowing their children are safe, happy and are building their social and emotional skills in a safe environment.

Our parenting services supports parents in their most important role increasing their parenting skills,  confidence self-esteem and knowledge.

Helping them build strong positive relationships with their children to ensure they get the best start in life.

Giving them the opportunities to meet and engage with other parents at the same stage of parenthood to support each other on the journey.
